Court sentences Chinese to death for killing Nigerian girlfriend
A Kano-based High Court on Tuesday pronounced a death sentence by hanging on Chinese national, Frank Geng-Quangrong, 47, who stabbed his Nigerian girlfriend, Ummukulsum Sani, 22, to death.

A resident at Kano Railway quarters, Geng-Quangrong, was convicted on one count charge bordering on culpable homicide.

While delivering judgment, Justice Sanusi Ado-Ma’aji, upheld that the prosecution had proven its case beyond any reasonable doubt, adding that, “The defendant’s testimony is inconsistent I hereby find him guilty.”

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, the Attorney-General of Kano State, Haruna Dederi, informed the court that the convict committed the offence on September 16, 2022 at Janbulo Quarters Kano.

According to him, on the same date at about 9pm, the convict stabbed the deceased with a knife in her house located at Janbulo Quarters, Kano for undisclosed reason.

“The victim was promptly rushed to the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, where she was confirmed dead on arrival by a medical doctor,” he added.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

During the trial, the prosecution presented six witnesses to prove their case against the defendant, including his four exhibits.

The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravenes the provision of Section 221(b) of the Penal Code.

The defence counsel, Muhummad Dan’azumi, presented the defendant to defend himself and one other witness, who tendered five exhibits.

Dan’azumi urged the court to recommend the defendant for a prerogative of mercy under Section 313 of ACJL.

In his testimony, the accused, Frank said, “I didn’t kill Ummulkhulsum intentionally but stabbed her in self-defence after she grabbed my testacles.”

He pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy in its judgment.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the verdict, the victim’s mother, Hajiya Fatima Zubairu, expressed satisfaction with the judge’s death sentence, acknowledging that it will serve as a deterrent in the future for anyone who takes the law into his hands.

Headfort @ 5: Foundation expresses commitment for access to justice for all
The Executive Director of Headfort Foundation, Mrs Oluyemi Orija, said they are committed to seeking access to justice for all at a recent event to mark their five years anniversary in Lagos.

Newsmen reports that the NGO founded in 2019 had impacted over 2 million people on human rights advocacy, rendered legal aid to 12000 beneficiaries and through it's legal services have facilitated the release of 628 indigent pre-trial inmates, and many more impact stories.

Orija, in her remarks on the 5th anniversary tagged “5 Years of Restoring Justice”, said herself and her team have focused on creating a society where everyone has access to justice.

She said that the foundation would expand its work to policy reforms, as a way of institutionalisingthe gains and impacts of its work in the past five years

“If we secure the release of two inmates today, there is a possibility that eight others would be arrested same day. So, we can’t keep securing the release of inmates when several others are getting back there.

“As such, we want to focus on policy reforms and address the causative factors behind the detainment of inmates,” Orija said.

She said that one of the flagship project of the foundation 'Lawyers- Without- Border' would be expanded to other states across the country to drive more impact and also focus on juvenile justice reforms.

The executive director expressed profound gratitude to the judiciary and the Nigeria Police Force for the collaboration and partnership that existed between them and the foundation.

"In addition to its direct legal assistance efforts, we have been at the forefront of advocacy campaigns aimed at addressing systemic injustices and promoting legislative reforms to safeguard human rights.”

"Through strategic partnerships, grassroots mobilization, and targeted advocacy initiatives, the organization has effectively raised awareness about pressing human rights issues and advocated for meaningful policy changes at local, national, and international levels.

“Our journey has been marked by resilience, determination, and unwavering dedication to the principles of justice and equality. As we celebrate this milestone, we recommit ourselves to the ongoing pursuit of a more just and equitable society for all.”

Orija also expressed gratitude to donors and benefactors of the foundation for the trust they repose in them.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Todimu Ige, a human rights lawyer who spoke on the ‘Intersection of Poverty Alleviation and Human Rights Violation in Nigeria’, said that poverty has aggravated violation of human rights in the country, and that it was important for Nigerians to know their rights.

Ige urged Nigerians to unite to make the system work, adding that there is a plethora of laws in the country with little or no impacts.

Newsmen recalled that the foundation in that last five years had also organized advocacy for the awareness of human rights in public schools, motor parks, correctional centers , etc.

Recently, the foundation held a workshop for women at Ketu market to mark the International Women's Day, 2024.

The event had in attendance lawyers, representatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Judiciary, media and beneficiaries of the foundation's  interventions.

FG asks applicants to submit NINs for trade grants
The Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment has directed applicants of the Presidential Conditional Grant Scheme to submit their National Identification Numbers as part of the necessary requirements to obtain a grant earmarked to cushion the effect that recent economic reforms have had on businesses in the country.

The government through the Bank of Industry had said it would be disbursing three categories of funding totalling N200bn to support manufacturers and businesses across the country.

It said the new rule was based on the new regulations from the Central Bank of Nigeria directing Nigerians to link their National Identification Numbers with their bank accounts.

The trade minister, Doris Aniete issued the new directive in a post on her official X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

The post titled, “Update on the Presidential Conditional Grant Programme Application Process” explained that all applicants will receive an SMS from ‘FGGRANTLOAN’ with instructions to submit this information via a secure link adding that this step is essential for the continuation of the application process.

It added that only verified applicants will receive this notification, and NINs must match the applicant’s name for the process to proceed.

It read, “Dear Esteemed Applicants, The Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment thanks all applicants for their interest in the Presidential Conditional Grant Programme and assures that applications are being thoroughly processed.

“Due to new regulations from the Central Bank of Nigeria, it is now required for applicants to link their National Identification Numbers with their bank accounts. We currently do not have a record of the NINs of those who applied. Therefore all applicants will receive an SMS from ‘FGGRANTLOAN’ with instructions to submit this information via a secure link. This step is essential for the continuation of the application process.

“Only verified applicants will receive this notification, and NINs must match the applicant’s name for the process to proceed.

“We appreciate your patience and cooperation, and we will keep you updated on your application’s progress. Thank you for your participation and contribution to national growth.”

This latest development marks another delay in disbursing the grant announced by President Bola Tinubu in a nationwide address in August 2023 for manufacturers and small businesses.

In the address, the president said he was determined to strengthen the manufacturing sector, increase its capacity to expand, and create good-paying jobs.

“We are going to spend N75bn between July 2023 and March 2024. Our objective is to fund 75 enterprises with great potential to kick-start sustainable economic growth, accelerate structural transformation, and improve productivity.

‘’Each of the 75 manufacturing enterprises will be able to access N1bn credit at 9 per cent per annum with a maximum of 60 months repayment for long-term loans and 12 months for working capital,” Tinubu said.

But eight months later, the programme domiciled under the Trade Ministry and executed by the Bank of Industry is yet to reach a significant stage despite several promises by the minister.

In December last year, prospective beneficiaries who spoke to The PUNCH said they were in the dark about the reasons the funds had yet to be disbursed.

The President of the Association of Small Business Owners, Femi Egbesola, decried the slow pace data collation by the supervising agencies, alleging that genuine businesses were being deliberately discouraged from accessing the loans.

He said, “Well, I don’t know why it has not been disbursed. Immediately the announcement was made by the president at the national address about four months ago, we were all excited thinking succor had come somehow, somewhere. We were extremely hopeful but at the moment we have been disenfranchised because we have waited and there is no hope.

“We expected that even if the money has not been disbursed, communication should have been made to stakeholders, letting us know reasons why it hasn’t been disbursed, the current state and progress made, and the expected date to commence.”

Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong has disclosed how he managed to play with injury at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire.

Troost-Ekong, 30, sustained the injury in Nigeria’s second group game against the hosts.

The powerful centre-back missed the team’s last group game against Guinea-Bissau but returned to play every minute of his country’s remaining four games in the competition.

The PAOK Salonica of Greece defender scored three crucial goals for the Super Eagles at AFCON 2023 and was named Player of the Tournament.

In an interview with CNN World Sports, Troost-Ekong explained he managed the injury.

“I had a torn bicep femoris, which is basically the outside part of the hamstring. It happened during the tournament and I think I had a small tear initially in the second group stage game against Cote d’Ivoire. I managed to play on and then after the final I had another MRI, and we realised it was really ruptured,” he recounted.

“It was very sore playing with it, and I couldn’t really train after the second group game. I was just trying ice to keep the swelling down.

The former Watford player had a surgery on the injury last month.

Troost-Ekong is expected to be back in action in May.

Singer Floxy reveals how Owerri OAP’s sex-for-airplay demands made her quit music
Singer Chinwendu Florence Izuchukwu popularly known as Floxy has said that sexual harassment is the reason fewer ladies are doing music in Nigeria.

She recalled being asked for sex each time she took her song to radio station, adding that a presenter in Owerri, Imo State once swore that her songs will never be aired in their station if she doesn't sleep with him.

Floxy also stated that radio presenters are not the only culprits, saying that a DJ once proposed that she will maintain regular visits to his house once he starts playing her songs in clubs and events.

“There were other girls experiencing the same thing back them and today, none of them is active in music now, everyone quit and left it for them”

“These things make you question your ability. You start doubting how good you are or if you're just good for the sex and nothing more”

Chinwendu Florence Izuchukwu aka Floxy

“You see people hail you in public, share their contacts and when you meet them in private, they forget why you're there and start talking about how and when they want to sleep with you”

“A particular radio presenter in Owerri even refused to play a song I was featured in because I never slept with him”

“It was crazy back then and you'll just ask yourself how many people you'll end up sleeping with before you can become a star”

She said that even if she had wanted to consider their offers, there is no possible way people who are not stars on their own can make others a star.

“I checked their pasts and they haven't made anyone a star, so why will I be their first project? They are just liars and vampires”, she said.

Floxy, whose last release was ‘Forever Flora’, a compilation of her songs, said she has missed music and thinks a return would make a lot of sense.

She said she took out time to develop herself and now she is a graduate as well as a seamstress.

“I know a lot now, I've done a lot of things, but music keeps calling me”

“I know a lot has changed, but I am Floxy, and I can always take on anything. I am back for good, so just wait for it”, she said.

She revealed that she will be marking her return with a single in April and everyone should wait for it.

Soludo's Wife launches organic garden competition in Anambra secondary schools
Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, on Saturday launched the organic garden competition in Anambra secondary schools to encourage children to learn more about food and farming.

Soludo, while addressing Healthy Living teacher ambassadors in Awka, said the organic garden competition would help teach children the importance of food and farming and its impact on their lives.

She described organic farming as a process that involves the use of natural food sources and nutrients for farming practices without fertilizer or other chemicals.

"This competition is part of the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo campaign to achieve a culture of health consciousness, drive organic agriculture with emphasis on food safety and sustainable living.

"It will help our students learn valuable lessons about where their food comes from, the benefits of eating fresh and healthy foods, and how to care for the environment.

"Vegetable seeds will be distributed to schools and at the end of every term, schools with the three best gardens will be rewarded.

"Our children at a tender age will start to appreciate agriculture as an essential way of life and the need to be part of building solutions that foster healthy foods in the society," she said.

Hons. Onuigbo, Maren commend Tinubu for advancing energy transition reforms
Two national Climate Change and Energy Champions, Hon. Sam Onuigbo and Hon. Solomon Maren, have commended President Bola Tinubu for implementing the removal of fuel subsidy and the advancement of Nigeria's energy transition reforms.

The duo spoke as guests of honour at the workshop jointly organised by the Centre for Climate Change and Development Alex Ekwueme Federal University (CCCD, AE-FUNAI) and the Overseas Development Institute (ODI) in London.

The workshop, which was held virtually was organized to present findings from a recent report conducted on Nigeria’s subsidy reform and its energy transition agenda.

The CCCD and ODI report provided rigorous and evidence based analysis of the fuel subsidy removal that was introduced by Tinubu on the day he took office on May 29, 2023, and made several recommendations on policies and reforms needed to make the reform more progressive and climate friendly.

Onuigbo, Vice President (Africa) of the Global Legislators Organisation for a Balanced Environment (GLOBE) and sponsor of Nigeria’s Climate Change Act, 2021, while speaking at the workshop, said that the present administration deserve commendation for being bold and courageous enough to remove the fuel subsidy.

He acknowledged current negative economic impact on citizens, particularly those in the lower class of the economy, but insisted that petrol subsidy was a big weight that needed to be removed to avoid the debt spiral and the collapse of the economy.

It will be recalled that, according to figures from the NNPC, Nigeria spent 4.39 trillion naira ($9.7 billion) on a petrol subsidy in 2022.

Hon. Onuigbo noted that allocations to states have significantly increased following the removal of fuel subsidies and argued that it is imperative that those entrusted with the responsibilities of governance at the state level apply these extra resources in a well-focused manner to drive sustainable development goals, including those of energy transition.

He said this should be possible because the Nigerian President also signed the electricity act into law a few days after assuming office, which removed electricity from the exclusive list and put it on the concurrent list to enable other tiers of government to get involved in the process of energy provision and transitioning away from fossil fuels.

Hon. Onuigbo reiterated the importance of a balanced energy mix in Nigeria’s energy portfolio and the need for effective engagement of the private sector to mobilise the much-needed resources to advance Nigeria on a sustainable path to development.

On his own part, Hon. Solomon Maren said that fuel subsidy in Nigeria was like a time bomb waiting to explode and reiterated that President Tinubu should be praised for his boldness in addressing the matter.

He recalled that the Nigerian economy was almost grounded when it became difficult to meet its borrowing obligations amidst a porous border, which aided in the smuggling of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) into neighbouring countries and, of course, corruption.

Hon. Maren said that continuous payment of subsidies was a contradiction of the country’s commitment to achieve net zero by 2060.

He said that several steps could be taken to make the subsidy reform support energy transition and climate action in Nigeria.

He advocated for the introduction of clean cooking at the rural level, including solar-powered stoves, as part of efforts to reduce emissions.

He also decried the distribution of buses running on PMS for transportation across the states as part of the strategic plan to alleviate the subsidy effects and called on governments at all levels to embrace electric buses with installed solar panels to recharge their batteries.

Hon. Maren further highlighted the need to industrialise Nigeria to reduce the effect of foreign exchange fluctuations on the economy.

He celebrated the recently commissioned power project in Aba, Abia State as a shining example of policies that will assist the country in driving effective change through infrastructure development.

In his intervention, Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, the Director, CCCD, said that given that the exploration, production, and consumption of fossil fuels are main sources of Green House Gas (GHG) emissions in Nigeria, the removal of the subsidy by President Tinubu last year could be a major step in reducing fossil fuel-based emissions that are adding to the climate change impact on Nigeria.

He, however, noted that several years of experience from around the world have indicated that while it is important to reform fossil fuel regime subsidies, it is also necessary to do that in a way that is consistent with the broader objective of sustainable development and equity and fairness to ensure that the economically disadvantaged pollutions are not made worse off.

The report highlighted that fossil fuel subsidy removal holds the potential to contribute substantively to climate-resilient development through releasing finance for low-carbon and sustainable development imperatives, but notes that policies need to be put in place to ensure that the gains made from the subsidy are channelled to advancing energy transition objectives.

The report also calls for more aggressive policies to cushion the adverse distributional impacts, especially on the most economically vulnerable groups.

The report finds that rural and lowest-income households are the worst affected and that lower-income households are vulnerable to an increase in the price of goods.

On the gender disaggregated analysis of the welfare effects, female-headed households are disproportionately affected by energy reforms, and this is consistent both in urban and rural areas.

The Centre for Climate Change and Development (CCCD) at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, in collaboration with the World Resources Institute (WRI) in Washington, DC, is holding an online event to present key findings from recent national research on the implications of the oil and gas transition on the Nigerian economy.

Recall that Nigeria has launched its Energy Transition Plan (ETP) and has also committed to achieving Net Zero carbon economy by 2060.

Like many countries that are vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change, there is an understanding that a shift away from fossil fuels is a requirement.

However, Nigeria, being one of the largest oil-producing countries in Africa and a major exporter of crude oil, the shift may not be an easy proposition.

Given the heavy reliance on fossil fuel income, where oil represents up to 10 per cent of the nation’s GDP and accounts for more than 80 per cent of Nigeria’s total exports, the shift could cause significant revenue losses for various levels of government.

The shift will also have strong implications for the government’s ability to spend on social services and infrastructure, as well as cater for those employed in the public sector.

This potential loss of government revenue could have a multiplier effect on the entire economy. Effective planning and implementation of the transition would be required to ensure that it is just, equitable, and economically viable.

The Centre for Climate Change and Development, in collaboration with WRI, undertook the national research project with the main objective of assessing the impact of the transition away from the oil and gas sector on government revenues, workers supported by the oil and gas industry, and the overall impact on the economy.

The project yielded very interesting results and policy recommendations.

Some of the questions explored include, but not limited to:

How are oil and gas revenues distributed from national to various sub-national governments; and how are those revenues currently utilised? What are the fiscal implications of the transition away from oil and gas for the national and sub-national governments, especially those that are heavily reliant on oil and gas revenues? How will the transition away from oil and gas impact workers directly and indirectly supported by the industry? What is the suite of policy recommendations that can enable a just and equitable transition away from oil and gas in Nigeria? In the pre-event press conference, the Director of CCCD, Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke, stated that the research was conducted with high-calibre international organisations with several decades of experience, and it yielded interesting insights and policy recommendations that can support Nigeria in navigating the path towards sustainability.

Distinguished guests expected at the event include the WRI's International Climate Initiative, David Waskow, the Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, Dr. Salisu Dahiru, Hon. Eng. Solomon Bulus Maren, National Coordinator of the African Parliamentary Network on Climate Action, and Hon. Sam Onuigbo, a member of the governing Board and Chairman of the Committee on Climate Change of the North East Development Commission, will be guests of honour at the event.

This event is also intended to present the results of national research done on this important subject, using models and scenarios to analyse the impact of the oil and gas transition on the economy of Nigeria.

The online event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at 2:00 P.M (WAT).

Two students have been arrested for allegedly faking their own kidnap.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the arrest on Thursday.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, told NAN that the suspects also demanded $100,000 (about N150 million) ransom from their parents.

He gave the names of the suspects as Ayodele Balogun, 21, a 200-level student of Education at the Lagos State University, Ijanikin, and his friend, Dennis Okuomo, 21, a student of NIIT Lagos.

According to him, both faked their kidnap and demanded N150 million to assist Ayodele, who is from a poor family.

“It was Dennis’s idea because Ayodele is from a poor family and his best friend; he wanted to use it to raise money for him so that he can be able to take care of his family,” Hundeyin said.

The command’s spokesman said that on Feb. 2, Ayodele disappeared from home, while Dennis used his (Ayodele’s) phone to inform his father, Mr Balogun, of his son’s faked kidnap and demanded $20,000 (about N30 million) ransom.

Hundeyin said the suspects had directed Ayodele’s father to pay the ransom through Bitcoin, which wallet they had sent him while Ayodele was hiding in Dennis’s room in his (Dennis’s) father’s hotel.

“Ayodele’s father, a driver with a private company, received the message with many worries, wondering where to raise $20,000.”

Hundeyin said when Balogun could not raise the money, Dennis decided to also fake his own kidnap and demanded for 100,000 dollars (about N150 million) from his own father.

According to him, both suspects decided to leave the hotel to hide in a bush and remained there for five days while the negotiation and investigation were ongoing.

“On March 16, as no money was paid and the suspects were not comfortable with the condition of the bush, they decided to return to Dennis’s room in his father’s hotel.

“They told everybody that they just escaped from kidnappers’ den, and quickly called Ayodele’s father to inform them about their purported escape from the kidnappers’ den.

”They took Ayodele to the hospital believing that he just came from the kidnappers’ den.

“Investigation so far revealed that the suspects faked their own kidnap.

“They are in our custody, two perpetrators of self-kidnap,” he noted.

Obitti Ohaji decries social neglect by govt, oil companies, calls for urgent intervention
By Ikenna Orioha

The people of Obitti autonomous community in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area of Imo State, have decried continued sheer social neglect by government and oil exploring companies operating at their area.

They regretted that from time immemorial, the community, which housed Imo Rubber Estate for over 80 years, have not seen nor used social amenities such as electricity, solid road network, pipe born water, functional and affordable hospital, including secondary school.

The people who spoke to our reporter on Thursday through one of their youth leaders, Mazi Amadi Ifeanyi, said that Obitti community contributes hugely to the revenue generation of Imo State, frowning that their resources are rather used to develop other communities that contribute nothing to the economy of the state, whereas they wobble in darkness, abject penury and social abandonment.

Amadi, who described the people of Obitti as peace loving, resourceful, friendly, accommodating and sociable, called on government and oil exploring companies operating at their area to urgently intervene by doing the needful to avert restiveness by host community who he said are running out of patience over their shortchanging and obvious social and economic marginalization.

According to the community leader, "Obitti autonomous community as part of Imo State has from inception suffered social and educational neglect from government and on the other hand since petroleum resources was discovered in Obitti Multi National Oil Companies had also toed the path of the government by not doing the needful in line with Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)/Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) reached with the community. They have also undermined Oil Act".

He added that "presently, there is no government presence in Obitti. For instance, there is no public secondary school, hospital, electricity, good road. Basic social amenities are totally  lacking there. Due to the activities of these oil companies, there are health implications on residents of the area".

"there are countless number of trucks or tankers conveying petroleum products that have been sold to independent marketers. Besides, there is a Modula Refinery built by Waltersmith Petroleum located at the boundary of Awarra and Obitti and yet the road that leads to the Modula Refinery is deplorable, posing danger to users and residents".

"Residents of the community are the ones suffering the outcome of the oil activities there because the Modula Refinery is closer to Obitti and Waltersmith Petroleum and others are using Obitti Road for all their activities"

He also said that both the government and the oil companies should as a matter of urgency declare state of emergency on infrastructure/social amenities in Obitti community.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has said that the deployment of soldiers to the Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra cannot stop the operation of the Eastern Security Network, ESN, in the state.

IPOB refered to the deployment of soldiers to the area as illegal and a waste of government resources.

Emma Powerful, the spokesman of IPOB, said Ogbaru Community is calm due to the assistance of ESN and protection from criminals and Fulani bandits.

In a statement he signed, Powerful said: “The global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) ably led by the great prophet and liberator Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu sees the continuous and illegal deployment of soldiers in Ogbaru LGA, Anambra State by the Governor, Professor Charles Soludo as a waste of time and resources. Soludo’s interest is to please his Fulani Masters with claims of chasing away ESN Operatives for political favors.

“Reports have it that Governor Soludo has given order to the military joint forces to invade Ogbaru LGA of Anambra State, especially Umunankwo, Echeuche, and Osamalla Communities. The above named communities have witnessed an influx of murderous Nigeria Military via invitation by Governor Soludo, thinking he will stop IPOB. Due to the military invasion of Ogbaru Communities, many schools have been closed, and farmers are not able to go to their farms. Governor Soludo and his murderous military have sent Ogbaru children out of school. He will also create hunger in Anambra State and Alaigbo as soldiers are preventing Ogbaru farmers from going to farms as the farming season commences.

“Governor Soludo and his military are threatening to burn down houses in the community if they don’t inform them about the activities of IPOB/ESN Operatives. Governor Soludo’s terrorist military has burnt down many houses already in Ogbaru. We don’t know why some of the acclaimed governors in the East are against ESN for protecting Biafra Land against marauding Fulani jihadist herdsmen and bandits. All they do is satisfy their Fulani political Masters in Abuja with the blood of their brothers and sisters who voted them into office.

“The acclaimed Prof. Chukwuma Soludo was among the governors that Ndigbo thought would set an example for other governors to follow. At last, he is so daft and clueless like his predecessors. He hasn’t brought any visible development into Anambra since he was voted into office. All he does is to go about speaking grammar. Thanks for the ingenuity of the Anambra people who are developing Anambra State on an individual basis and as a community while Gov. Soludo goes around commissioning privately funded projects. What exactly is Soludo doing with federal allocations and state internally generated revenues? All he does is recruit Agboros as task force and military to be intimidating Anambra residents.

“Governor Soludo should focus on providing security and development to the Anambra people and stop being Abuja pleaser. He should demilitarize Anambra State of Boko Haram infiltrated Army. He should also disband or caution his notorious security groups such as AVG and Pillar Youths. If the Anambra State government refuses to call his notorious security groups to order, IPOB volunteers and ESN operatives would do what is necessary to keep our land and people safe.”

Man gets Pig kidney transplant in US Hosptals
Doctors in a USA hospital successfully transplanted into a living human on thursday, according to their announcement.

Massachusetts General Hospital said the genetically-edited pig kidney was transplanted into a 62-year-old man living with end-stage kidney disease.

Surgeons from the Mass General Transplant Centre conducted the four-hour surgery on Saturday.

The procedure marked a major milestone in the quest to provide more readily available organs to patients, the hospital said.

Mass General Brigham Chief Executive Officer Anne Klibanski said that researchers and clinicians were pushing the boundaries of science to transform medicine.

“Nearly seven decades after the first successful kidney transplant, our clinicians have once again demonstrated our commitment to providing innovative treatments and to also help ease the burden of disease for our patients and others around the world.’’

The operation was a milestone in xenotransplantation – transplantation of organs or tissues from one species to another as a potential solution to the worldwide organ shortage,” the hospital said.

The kidney came from a pig that was genetically-edited to remove harmful pig genes and add certain human genes to improve its compatibility with humans.

Scientists also inactivated porcine endogenous retroviruses in the pig donor to eliminate any risk of infection in humans.

The patient is said to be recovering well and expected to be discharged from the hospital soon.

Armed hoodlums suspected to be kidnappers on Tuesday morning again attacked the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku Ozalla, in Enugu State.

Earlier this year, a resident doctor was attacked by gunmen on the hospital premises and abducted but later managed to escape from the kidnappers’ den.

Vanguard learnt that the kidnappers allegedly abducted a female deputy director of the hospital and a security man.

An SUV allegedly belonging to the abducted woman, a nurse, was seen abandoned in a viral video with bullet-perforated glass on the front passenger side.

The police and hospital management are yet to confirm the incident at the time of filing this report.

But a reliable source who confirmed the incident said it occurred at the same location where a medical doctor was abducted a few weeks ago.

“This is so sad; we are not safe at all in this hospital; everywhere is porous,” a distressed staff member lamented.”

Why I renamed Minna Airport after Tinubu — Niger gov
The Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has explained why he renamed the Abubakar Imam International Airport after President Bola Tinubu.

He said the renaming was prompted by the desire to ensure a square peg is placed in a square hole, noting that naming the State Polytechnic Zungeru, after the late literary icon, Abubakar Imam was more appropriate. He added that the president approved the decision.

Bago, in a last-minute decision, changed the name of the airport which was named after Imam in June last year to Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport, following its commissioning on Monday.

The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim made this known on Tuesday in a statement quoting Bago as announcing the development while granting a live interview on TVC News at 10 on Monday.

In a move to assuage the feelings of Niger citizens, the Governor named the State Polytechnic Zungeru, after the late literary icon, Abubakar Imam, saying, “It is a square peg in a square hole”.

Bago who explained the naming of the Polytechnic after Imam said the action was “simply to put a square peg in a square hole”.

Ibrahim noted that the Governor recounted the significant contributions of the famous Hausa author to not only the State but the country at large particularly northern Nigeria, pointing out that naming academic institutions after the Literary Icon was the best.

Speaking on the renaming of the Airport after Bola Ahmed Tinubu, less than a year after it was named the Abubakar Imam Kagara International Airport, Bago said, “It is in appreciation of the President, for approving the State to establish the first special Airport Agro-Processing Free Zone in Nigeria and his immense contributions to nation building.

“The State Government under my leadership has been enjoying tremendous support from the Tinubu-led government and the President is an astute politician and a great leader that should be celebrated”.

The Governor disclosed that the renaming of the Airport was done after consultations with relevant stakeholders including the State Executive Council members and after getting the approval of the President.

Controversial actor, Yul Edochie, has stated that he is not married to his ‘second wife’, Judy Austin.

He made this statement in response to a lawsuit filed against him by his ex-wife, May Edochie.

May Edochie accused her husband of adultery and filed for divorce

Yul told the court that his connection with Judy Austin was all about skitmaking.

He stated that there is no legally recognized union between them.

In a report by Premium Times, May’s legal team, led by Emeka Ugwuonye of Due Process Advocates, said in a statement that the ongoing case at the FCT High Court in Abuja, scheduled for a hearing on March 5, suffered an unexpected setback when the court session did not proceed, which Yul and Judy claimed credit for.

Ugwuonye said Yul wrote in his petition, “That since the news of the birth of Star in June 2021, Gistlover, as a negative blog that thrives in fake and manipulated information for financial gains, has been negatively exploiting every movie or skit featuring me and Judy and generating social media traffic for financial gains.”

He added that May’s petition mentioned a supposed traditional marriage ceremony between Yul and Judy on April 24, 2022, in Anambra State.

However, Yul refuted the claim, accusing a blogsite of spreading fake information for financial gain.

School abduction: Gumi offers to negotiate with bandits
Kaduna-based Muslim cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has revealed his intention to dialogue with bandits who abducted about 287 schoolchildren from Kuriga Government Secondary and LEA Primary Schools in the Chikun Local Government Area of the state.

Gumi said this in a bid to facilitate the release of the abducted schoolchildren should President Bola Tinubu give him the opportunity to negotiate.

According to the prominent Islamic scholar, Tinubu must not repeat the mistake made by former President Muhammadu Buhari, who refused to dialogue with bandits.

we reports that bandits invaded the Kuriga area of the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, shooting at their victims before taking away at least 280 of the pupils and teachers from both schools.

The incident occurred barely 24 hours after insurgents abducted 200 internally displaced women in Borno State.

The women were kidnapped in Ngala, the headquarters of Gambarou Ngala in Borno State, while fetching firewood in the bush.

Penultimate Thursday, bandits invaded the Gonin-Gora in the same Chikun LGA, prompting residents to barricade the Kaduna-Abuja Expressway in protest against the abduction of an unspecified number of people in the area.

Meanwhile, the government of the affected state has refused to dialogue with the bandits to release the schoolchildren and has also refuted claims that it had hired a private negotiator to facilitate the release of the victims.

However, reacting to the development, Gumi said in a statement, “The government’s stand of no negotiation with the bandits is an unfortunate position. My advice is that the government should dialogue with the bandits not only for these Kuriga school children’s abductions but all cases.

“Also, the government should use the same approach it used in releasing passengers that were abducted on the Abuja–Kaduna train in 2022 to release the Kuriga school children and others.

“I am ready to lead a holistic dialogue between the government and bandits. It is my religious duty to do so for peace.

“I hope the present government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will listen by dialoguing with the bandits because the past administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari refused to do so.”

Gumi had previously negotiated on behalf of state governments to free abducted people by bandits.

In May 2021, one of the parents of the kidnapped students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, Kaduna State, said rather than point an accusing finger at Gumi for being complicit in the banditry ravaging the country, Nigerians should commend the cleric for his interventions in seeking the release of abducted persons in the country.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Monday, tendered additional evidence against MICAD Project City Services Limited, and James Nolan, a Director of Process and Industrial Development Limited, before Justice Nora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja.

This was made known in a statement by the Head, Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Dele Oyewale.

The criminal case stemmed from controversial Gas Supply Processing Agreement between Process and Industrial Development and the Federal Government of Nigeria.

P&ID had obtained a $11bn award against the Federal Government over the botched contract.

But reprieve came the way of the country last October when a London arbitration court set aside the $11bn award, holding that the contract was fraudulently secured.

MICAD Project City Services Limited and James Nolan facing 20 counts bordering on “obtaining by false pretense, money laundering and criminal conversion of proceeds of crime, to the tune N151,394,328.00.”

In February, the International Criminal Police Organisation said it had arrested Nolan, in Italy after he jumped bail in Nigeria 2022, in the ongoing $9.6bn P&ID scandal.

At Monday’s court session, the prosecution counsel, Bala Sanga, informed the court that the EFCC had filed additional evidence before the court on February 20, 2024, and the defence counsel, Micheal Ajara, confirmed that they had been served the evidence.

Sanga then presented the third prosecution witness, Nnedimma Eyisi, a lawyer, who narrated to the court how James Nolan informed her that he needed to renew himself as the Director of MICAD.

Workers of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company have embarked on an industrial action, leaving residents of Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi states in darkness.

The workers, under the aegis of the Nigerian Union of Electricity Employees, commenced an indefinite strike on Tuesday after staging a protest over what they termed unjust treatment by the management of the company.

we gathered that the workers were aggrieved over six years’ unremitted pension, non-payment of the death benefit of deceased staff of the company, non-payment of exit package, the unjust sack of seven staff of the firm in Zaria, and an alleged plan to sack over 1,000 workers of the company, among others.

However, the management of Kaduna Disco condemned the industrial action in a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communication, Abdulazeez Abdullahi, describing the action as “completely unjustified.”

Abdulazeez said, “For the union to choose this path at the very start of the holy month of Ramadan and inflict more discomfort on hapless Nigerians by embarking on an ill-advised strike and forcing staff from carrying out their legitimate duties says a lot about its motive.”

Abdulazeez disclosed that the union’s demand for payment of outstanding pension arrears “is part of the historic debts accumulated under two previous managements.

“One wonders why the union failed to prioritise the payments then until now. This is a clear indication that the union has other motives yet unknown to us.”
