Rangnick shares real reason behind Man Utd’s impressive season under Ten Hag
Former Manchester United interim boss, Ralf Rangnick has revealed the reason behind the club’s impressive performance this season under their manager, Erik ten Hag.

Rangnick was appointed in charge of Man United for the second half of last season after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was discharged mid-season.

However, Ten Hag took over as the permanent head coach at the beginning of the current season.

Man United have made some significant improvements under Ten Hag’s tutelage as they have won 37, drawn eight, and lost nine out of 54 matches played under the Dutchman so far this season.

The Red Devils have won the Carabao Cup already this season and are also in the final of the FA Cup and could finish in the top four in the Premier League this term.

Speaking about Man United’s performances under Ten Hag, Rangnick said: “They have a very good coach, Erik ten Hag, so it isn’t that surprising that they finish in the top 4 this year.

“And now, in the FA Cup final against City, they even have the possibility of winning a second title.

“They brought in a lot of players. Other players who back then were not able to perform for various reasons are now back in top form again.”

Adeyanju advises Tinubu on choice of next CBN governor
The incoming administration of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu has been advised on how to appoint the next Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

Deji Adeyanju, a socio-political activist, said Tinubu’s incoming administration should appoint a renowned economist as the next CBN governor.

Adeyanju said the next CBN governor should have experience of working with financial institutes such as the International Monetary Fund, IMF, and World Bank.

In a tweet, Adeyanju urged Tinubu’s administration to stop appointing bankers as CBN governors.

According to Adeyanju: “FG must stop appointing bankers as CBN Gov. They know nothing about the economy.

“These are just mere marketers. An economist of repute with experience of working with world financial institutions and organs like IMF, World Bank, etc, should be the next CBN Gov.”

Emefiele was appointed on June 4, 2014 and his second tenure is expected to end in 2024.

During the electioneering period, CBN had brought up a monetary policy that affected Nigerians and almost scuttled Tinubu’s victory.

No force can stop your swearing in – Ohanaeze Ime-Obi pleadges support to Tinubu
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Ime-Obi, on Saturday, declared that no force on earth will stop the swearing-in of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu on May 29.

Ime-Obi, which is Ohanaeze’s highest decision-making body, said the organization would give Tinubu the maximum support towards ensuring that his administration succeeds.

It was reacting to a faction of the Ohanaeze that it would not recognize Tinubu as the President-elect over his refusal to include Igbos in his transition committee.

Speaking through the Ohanaeze’s Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the body stressed that it recognizes Tinubu as the President-elect of Nigeria and would support him after his inauguration.

Chatting with DAILY POST, Isiguzoro said: “Some people are making an unauthorized statement that they don’t recognize Tinubu as the president-elect, but let me make it categorically clear that those statements are coming from unpatriotic elements that have been suspended from the Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

“Ohanaeze will participate fully in the inauguration of the President-elect. It’s unpatriotic for anyone to use the name of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to say that a man who was declared the winner of the 2023 presidential election would not be recognized by Ndigbo.

“Ndigbo fully recognizes the president-elect, Vice President-elect, Shettima and we will continue to give them maximum support until a court of competent jurisdiction says otherwise.

“We will not allow people who made Ndigbo enemies of Buhari in 2015 to lead us into another tight situation where Igbos will be portrayed illegitimately that we are against or will not recognize the President-elect, which is not the position of Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

“Ndigbo are progressive-minded, economically oriented and would continue to support any government at the centre.

“Those trying to pick quarrels on behalf of Ndigbo against Tinubu will not succeed because we are partaking in the inauguration at the Eagles Square, and there is no force on earth that would stop the President-elect from being sworn in.

“Tinubu should not listen to those not speaking on behalf of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, we will continue to support and give him maximum support and ensure that his government succeeds.

“The Ime-Obi Ohanaeze has never authorized anybody to speak against the President-elect. Ime-Obi has fully identified and would support whoever won the presidential election.

“Ohanaeze is not an enemy to the president-elect and would not allow anybody to make an unfounded statement that Ohanaeze does not recognize Tinubu.”

"Buhari's adimmistration spent close to N10 trillion on fuel subsidies"-Peter Esele
Peter Esele, Former president of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, has said he was not surprised that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration suspended the fuel subsidies removal in June.

Esele disclosed this on Friday during a Channels Television interview monitored by DAILY POST.

Recall that the federal government had suspended the proposed fuel subsidy removal via the National Economic Council despite the fact it would save Nigeria over N6 trillion in revenue.

But Esele, a former president of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN, said the Buhari administration would have removed the fuel subsidy one year into its government if it wanted to phase out the regime.

According to him, Buhari is simply beating about the bush on fuel subsidy removal in the last eight years without the political will to achieve it.

“I think this government, if they wanted to remove fuel subsidies, would have done it in the first year of their administration when they had huge political capital to expend, but since it was not done, what they have been doing over the years is kicking the can down the room”, he said.

According to industry data, from May 2015 to May 29, 2023, Buhari’s administration would have spent close to N10 trillion on fuel subsidies.

Bandits resume killing in Plateau communities, over 200 people confirmed dead
For decades, there has been repeated mass and isolated attacks by armed men on farming communities in Plateau. While this has become a tragic trend, it usually escalates during each farming season when all the farmers increase the tempo of agricultural work on their farms. Apart from these attacks against the poor rural farmers, the farming communities are also ravaged by the persistent violent ethno-religious conflicts that routinely break out in the Plateau Metropolis.

However, when peace-building efforts by state and non-state actors are able to mitigate violence of any form, the citizens are usually happy and make efforts to guard the resulting fragile peace in the state. But recently, crisis merchants and enemies of the state and its people have resumed their isolated attacks and killings of unarmed citizens who were going about their businesses.

This is even as the security agencies appear helpless in apprehending the masterminds before they strike. In the last two weeks, scores of people have been killed in the farming communities of Mangu, Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, Jos North, and Riyom local government areas, thereby raising fears among the people in the farming communities of the state.

From Rawuru community, Tapo (in the Heipang district), Barkin Ladi; Kwi, Kuru Station (Wereng) in Riyom; Murish in Bokkos, and Jwak Maitumbi in Mangu local government area, families are mourning the killing of their loved ones in the night attacks. A resident of Rawuru, Micah, said the last attack occurred around 8.00 p.m. on Saturday and claimed the life of Dachung Luka, who was shot dead at the Rawuru junction. Micah lamented that at about the same time the following day, some armed men in transit shot and killed two people at Kuru Station, and residents also discovered a corpse at the Kwi community on Monday morning. The Heipang incident, in which four young men were killed, took place at about 9.00 p.m., and the deceased was buried on Monday.

The ugly developments made the natives raise the alarm that many armed attackers had assembled at Sham, Wereng, Kum, Byei of Riyom LGA, and Farin Lamba and Dabwak (Kuru) in Jos South with the plan of launching an attack on them, and they cautioned their neighbours in Chaha, Rangyel, Kaduna Vom, and Chakarum, to be on the alert.

Although the police spokesman, DSP Alfred Alabo, could not be reached at the time of this report, the spokesman of Operation Safe Haven, OpSH, keeping the peace in the state, Capt. Oya James, said personnel of the OpSH are on the trail of the culprits.

However, Rwang Tengwong, the National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Movement, lamented that no fewer than six persons were killed and two others injured on Sunday night during the coordinated attacks by Fulani militias on residents of the Wereng community in the Bachi District of Riyom LGA as well as Tapo village in Heipang District in Barkin Ladi LGA. Tengwong said: “Two persons were killed at Wereng, while four persons were killed at Tapo. The attacks were simultaneously coordinated between the hours of 8.00 and 10.00 p.m. At Wereng, a household was attacked, leaving one person dead and the other ambushed on his way to the Kwi community. At Tapo, nine youths were ambushed on their way home, four were killed and five escaped.

“The survivors said the attackers, who spoke Fulfulde, laid an ambush at Tapo forest, sporadically opening gunfire at them when the unsuspecting youths were returning home from Heipang, the district headquarters. Among those killed was a 24-year-old student of Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi campus, named Tapshak Guwus. When Tapo was attacked, distress calls were made to the vigilante, police and Operation Safe Haven, OpSH. The vigilante and police personnel responded by immediately rushing to the scene, but sadly the OpSH outrightly declined to make an appearance until about 8:00 a.m. on Monday with no convincing moral justification for not responding, which is quite unusual given its usual timely responses to such situations previously.”

Tengwong added that on Monday, “another dastardly act of ambush was meted out on Rev. Gwong Dachollom of Darwat at about 3:00 pm along the Darwat-Wereng Camp route, where he was hacked and his motorcycle taken away by the attackers; he is presently receiving.

Frank Nweke expresses huge shock over the murder of APGA chieftain
Chief Frank Nweke jr, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship candidate in the 2023 elections, has said he is still in shock over the murder of the party’s former governorship aspirant, Mr Dons Udeh, in Enugu.

Nweke expressed his feelings in a statement made available to newsmen in Enugu on Thursday, describing the murder as sad.

According to him, “I am still in shock over the news of the kidnap and murder of Engr. Dons Udeh, and my heart goes out to his family and friends at this difficult time.

“It is incredibly sad to see how our society has debased the value of human life. I am particularly heartbroken to see another prominent son of Ozalla attacked in such a manner.

“While I acknowledge the high level of insecurity across the state and, indeed, Nigeria, this is one murder too many.

“We must continue to call for better societal values and definitive actions from our political leadership and security outfits.”

He urged the security agencies and all relevant stakeholders to ensure that the murder and previous attacks that were yet to be resolved in the state were treated with utmost urgency.

Nweke called for the perpetrators to be brought to book and sanity restored in the state.

“No one has the right to take another human life. This madness must be stopped, and we must return to the values that make us human,“ Nweke said.

Davido opens up why he started singing
Award-winning Nigerian singer, David Adeleke, aka Davido, has opened up on why he quit his first job as a record producer for singing.

The Omo Baba Olowo crooner said he had wanted to work in the background as a producer but started singing after he discovered he was better than the singers he was recording.

He disclosed this in a recent interview with Forbes.

He said, “I used to be a producer. I have always wanted to be like in the background of things. So, I used to have an older cousin, he was like the musician of the family. I’m the last born of my family. But then I was very good with like computers, tech, stuff like that.

“So, when he told me he does music, I quickly went to go and learn how to record music from YouTube. I bought a computer, programme and everything, so I started learning on YouTube. Then I started recording artists. One of my cousins that always with me every time in the studio, he noticed that if you are an artist and I’m recording you. He noticed that if the artist made a mistake, I’m like ‘Nah, don’t sing it like that, sing it like this. Sing it this way, it will catch their ears more this way.’

“So, over time doing that, I was like ‘Yo! I’m better than everybody that I’m recording’. I was like ‘You know, maybe I should record a song’. The first song I ever recorded, blew up.”

Just in: Supreme Court adjourns Nnamdi Kanu’s trial till next month
The Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned the hearing of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, till next month.

The decision of the Supreme Court was disclosed in a tweet by Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor.

Tweeting, Ejimakor wrote: “Sadly, the Supreme Court has adjourned the #MNK appeal hearing to next month.”

The secessionist had on November 3, 2022, filed an appeal at the Supreme Court against the Court of Appeal’s ruling halting his release from the DSS custody.

Kalu appealed against the 28 October, 2022 decision of the Court of Appeal, which stayed the execution of its earlier order acquitting him of all charges and directing his release from the custody of the secret police.

Prior to the hearing, Kanu’s Special Counsel had urged the Supreme Court to ensure justice in the trial of the IPOB leader, stressing that his matter should end today.

Many prominent Igbo leaders, as well as the Ohanaeze Ndigbo have been clamouring for Kanu’s release before President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure ends in one month time, precisely, May 29, 2023.

Police probe murder of Enugu APGA chieftain
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Ahmed Ammani, has ordered the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigative Department and Tactical Squads of the Command to unravel the circumstances of the murder of a Chieftain of All Progressives Grand Alliance, Mr Dons Udeh.

The commissioner directed that the perpetrators of the heinous crime be fished out and brought to book within the shortest possible time.

This is contained in a statement issued by the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on Thursday in Enugu.

According to him, the lifeless and decomposing body of the deceased, identified as a 2023 Enugu State Governorship Election Aspirant under the APGA, was found in a bush at 9th Mile Bypass in Udi Local Government Area, on April 25, at about 11:00 a.m.

“His lifeless body was found with marks of violence, which strongly suggests that he was murdered.

“The corpse was evacuated to the hospital, where it was confirmed dead and deposited in the mortuary for preservation and medical autopsy by Police operatives serving in the 9th Mile Police Division of the Command,” he said.

Ndukwe said that preliminary investigation indicated that the deceased was reported to have been missing since April 22 at about 4 p.m., when he left his Enugu city home in a white-coloured Toyota Highlander Jeep, with registration number, ENU 800 NX, to an undisclosed destination.

“All efforts made to trace his whereabouts proved abortive until his remains were found on the date and location, while the vehicle was later found abandoned and recovered on April 26 at about 10:00 a.m., at Ngwo on Old Enugu Road.

According to an anonymous source, the fire started at about 1 am on Wednesday and it continued till the afternoon.

Alhaji Alin Ashiru, the chairman of Timber dealers in the market attributed the inferno to an electric spark.

Curbing The NAICOM Cartel And Its Cut-Throat Motor Insurance
By

Felix Oboagwina

As last year drew to a close, the 58 insurance firms in Nigeria under the umbrella of the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) served notice that minimum Third-Party subscription for motor vehicles would no longer cost N5,000 but N15,000 beginning from this New Year. Some years ago, they charged N1,000 as minimum payable on motor insurance.

Contrast with the current debate on the social media about MultiChoice serving a notice of increase on GOtv and DSTV subscribers. The increase ranges from 16 percent to 22 percent. Despite this, people are shouting BLUE MURDER! Subscribers are calling for the cable TV firm to be skinned or beheaded, saying MultiChoice would not dare such in its home headquarters, South Africa. Last time MultiChoice tried it, the matter went as far as the National Assembly.

This same National Assembly now looks the other way with the new insurance premiums. What is the cable TV’s 22 percent increment, compared to 200 percent by NAICOM? What insurers have done is brazen and indecent! To increase the minimum Third-Party motor insurance to 300 percent is not only unreasonable it is draconian. It is an act of impunity. It is extortionist, insensitive, inconsiderate, untimely, ill-advised, selfish and self-serving. It panders to the unbridled greed of industry operators. The brazenness is insulting. In short, the hike is highly inconsiderate, especially in this era of scarce and expensive fuel and an economy still reeling from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yet insurers blame the N10,000 increment on “current economic realities.” Not acceptable!

There are an estimated 13 million vehicles in Nigeria, of which only some 3 million have been captured in the insurance net. Instead of seeking ways to lure the noncompliant 10 million vehicle-owners to buy into insurance, insurers want to milk conformists to death. Where will patrons accommodate this increase, in a country with a minimum wage of N30,000?

Of course, those earning minimum wage do not own vehicles. However, they use transportation. When the prices of vehicle inputs like fuel, tolls and spare parts become costlier, vehicle owners simply transfer them to commuters through higher fares. Adding a costlier insurance to the motor value chain amounts to subjecting vehicle owners to double, nay multiple, jeopardy, with the spiral effect translating to higher transport fares and costlier freighting fees.

Imagine if other elements in the motor driving particulars too decide to follow suit. It means that drivers and owners would pay three times on:

- Vehicle Licence

- Road Worthiness

- Hackney Permit

- Drivers Licence

- Customs Papers

- Tinted Glass Permits (which the Police Force deserves kudos for waiving) and other council and business locations tickets.

Someone said, "Insurance is the sale of promises. The ‘customer’ pays money now; the insurer promises to pay money in the future if certain events occur. Sometimes, the promise will not be tested for decades." Sometimes the promise will not be even tested forever! In fact, only about 15 percent insurance subscribers ever bother to make accident claims. The greater proportion of claimants comes from corporate policyholders. Thus, the insurance firm is the greater beneficiary in the relationship because the individual motor policyholder would just lick his wound and settle the bills jejely.

Everyone knows that the Third-Party insurance on vehicles is just to fulfil all righteousness –a legal requirement with which transport owners must comply. In Nigeria here, they refer to it as, “Let-My-People-Go Insurance,” or “Let-Me-Pass Insurance.” Third-Party is the paper drivers obtain just to satisfy the police. That’s all!

In case of accident or damage to Third-Party vehicles, insurance customers hardly bother to engage themselves in the stress of filing claims. The red tape and bureaucracy is so organised as to be stressful and time-wasting. Therefore, claimants simply pay from their pockets. Commercial bus and employed drivers are a common sight, kneeling and prostrating on the ground for the mercy of those whose cars they bash. Hence, the insurance firm reaps from doing NOTHING!

Since owning personal cars for over two decades now, I have been involved in accidents. Not once have I made a single claim! In fact, apart from an Insurance Broker in my church, no one I know has EVER made a claim. Not one! In fact, late last year, someone in my neighbourhood had his SUV crushed by a falling container. The owner of the offending trailer came privately to plead for the victim to accept N7 million for a vehicle worth N12 million. Family members told the victim to thank God for surviving the ordeal and accept the money. That is how we roll.

As of 2019, the Nigerian industry ranked 62nd in the world with $1.64 billion premium. That makes it an industry worth some N1.2 trillion. In 2021, the unaudited Insurance Industry performance in Nigeria showed that insurance firms made a gross income of N630 billion, and posted N238.05 billion as net expenditure. Talk about a fertile cash cow.

Insurers benefit colossally from the statutory laws making vehicle insurance cover mandatory for cars, trucks and motorcycles. The Insurance Act 2003 mandates all motorists to carry the minimum of a Third-Party Motor Insurance Policy. Section 68 of the 2003 Insurance Act stipulates:

“No person shall use or cause or permit any other person to use a motor vehicle on a road unless a liability which he may thereby incur in respect of damage to the property of third parties is insured with an insurer registered under this Act.”

The law varies in the US, where most states, require vehicles to carry motor insurance. However, there are two US states where it is not mandatory –Virginia and New Hampshire. Countries like New Zealand, Saudi Arabia and Manila do not require a compulsory insurance for vehicles to ply the roads.

It is compulsory in Britain too, hence, we see that mandatory insurance is part of our colonial heritage. This colonial heritage must go now. As our colonial hangover, motor insurance is being weaponised for inordinate extortion, unbridled greed and excessive profiteering by insurers operating under a NAICOM cartel.

Time has come to break up this cartel. With NAICOM calling the shots, it amounts to a monopoly, which should not hold in a free enterprise and deregulated economy. NAICOM is operating like a cartel. We consumers reject being milked by this privileged cartel. Nigeria should make insurance OPTIONAL. This Ninth National Assembly or the coming Tenth National Assembly should make this a matter of urgent public importance. Legislators should change the law to deregulate insurance or scrap this motor insurance law. The NASS should tweak the Insurance Act. Expunge, reframe, rephrase, rewrite restructure or remove that part of the law that makes it compulsory for vehicles to carry an insurance paper to travel the roads. If vehicles MUST be insured, the law should permit no more than a marginal increase, going forward. Motor insurance premium should take a cue from MultiChoice –no increment should be over 20 percent.

Legislators need to make a law to make motor insurance deregulated, optional or non-exploitative. They would be writing their name in gold.

Ancelotti reveals Real Madrid player who performed well against Girona
Real Madrid head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, said that winger Vinicius Junior was the only player from Los Blancos to perform well against Girona during Tuesday’s La Liga tie.

Real Madrid suffered a shock 4-2 defeat at the Montilivi against Girona on Tuesday night.

Valentin Castellanos netted all four goals for Girona against Real Madrid, as Vinicius was on the scoresheet for Ancelotti’s side.

Following the match, Ancelotti lauded Vinicius for his performance.

The former Chelsea manager said (as quoted by @theMadridZone on Twitter): “Vinicius was good; he got a goal and assist, but the whole team? No.

“We weren’t forceful; we have left too much space.”

Real Madrid’s next game is against Almeria this weekend.

LP Apapa denies withdrawing Obi’s petitions from tribunal
The Lamidi Apapa faction of the Labour Party has denied claims that it approached the presidential election tribunal to withdraw the petition filed by the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

DAILY POST recalls that the embattled Julius Abure faction had on Tuesday raised the alarm that Apapa and his team had gone to the tribunal in Abuja to withdraw Obi’s petition challenging the victory of Bola Tinubu.

But, Apapa described the publication as one laced with deliberate falsehood, saying it is an “epistle of personal bitterness, ignorance and complete unintelligent outburst.”

In a statement made available to DAILY POST on Wednesday by the faction’s Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, Apapa said Abure had been restrained by the Abuja high court “over confirmed allegations of forgery of court seal” and others, saying it is not new that he could engage in “cheap blackmail to gain public sympathy in order to cover up his criminal tracks.”

Apapa challenged Abure to produce a copy of the letter which he or the Secretary signed to seek the withdrawal of the petition at the tribunal.

While saying he and his team would not be intimidated by “these wicked lies”, Apapa pointed out that the publication was “a well orchestrated plan by Abure to incite violence and chaos in order to make Nigeria ungovernable.”

The statement quoted the Labour Party leader as saying that he and his team would not engage in any verbal war with those he called “pedestrian political misfits and despots”, saying it was obvious that “Abure is trying to whip up sentiment on his travails.”

He concluded that the Labour Party under his leadership stands with Obi on the “mission to reclaim the mandate freely given to him and our party during the February 25th 2023 Presidential and National Assembly election.”

Video: Tinubu, Betara hold closed-door meeting over Reps Speakership
A contender for the Speakership position of the 10th House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Muktar Betera Aliyu, was in a closed-door meeting with the President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seek his support and endorsement.

The member representing Biu/Bayo/Shani and Kwaya Kusar Federal Constituency of Borno State has been canvassing support for his speakership aspiration with party members, House of Reps members-elect, former lawmakers and other stakeholders.

In a video made available by his media office on Wednesday morning, Tinubu held Betara’s hand as he led him into the inner room for discussions.

Betera’s consultation visit to the President-elect took place at his new official residence at the Defence House in Abuja, following the latter’s return from vacation and the Muslim lesser Hajj in Saudi Arabia.

Also seen in the video alongside Betara were the outgoing Senate President, Sen. Ahmad Lawan; former Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi; and other loyalists of the President-elect.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo discloses Why they've not congratulated Tinubu
The Ohanaeze Ndigbo socio-political organization has said it is not in a hurry to congratulate President-elect Bola Tinubu.

Ohanaeze’s national Vice President, Damian Okeke-Ogene, said it cannot congratulate Tinubu until the outcome of the court process.

Recall that Peter Obi of the Labour Party and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had approached the tribunal, challenging the declaration of Tinubu as the winner of the February 25th general election.

Speaking on Tuesday, Okeke-Ogene said, ”Ohanaeze is not in a hurry to recognise Tinubu as the President-elect because any house built on a faulty foundation is bound to collapse.

“We believe that the process of the 2023 presidential election is still on.

“The voting has been done and the court has taken over and until the outcome of the court process is known, we cannot take a stand on the 2023 election.”

Timi Frank petitions DSS, accuses ex-Minister Sylva of certificate forgery
Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Timi Frank, has petitioned the Department of State Services, DSS, alleging that the former Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipreye Sylva, forged his certificate.

The petition, which was addressed to the Director General of the Department of State Services, was copied to the National Assembly and asked that Sylva be investigated in the national interest.

In a statement he sent to DAILY POST in Abuja on Wednesday, Frank alleged that the former Governor of Bayelsa State, currently the Bayelsa governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the coming November election, was also involved in identity theft.

The revelation, according to him, was contained in the petition raised by his solicitors.

In the petition, dated March 31, 2023, and signed by the Principal Partner of Graylaw Practice LP, Edward Omaga Esq., Frank urged the National Assembly to summon Sylva and officials from his alma maters in Nigeria and Switzerland to explain the inconsistencies in the identity of the politician.

He said: “Sylva’s primary school certificate carried his name as Anagha Timipere as evident in documents the ex-Minister filed before a court in the United States as part of an ongoing defamation suit brought by his lawyers.

“Anagha Timipere was different from Marlin Anagha Timipre, which is the name on Sylva’s WAEC certificate.

“The ex-petroleum minister had also obtained his bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Port-Harcourt, with the certificate bearing Anagha Timipre Marlin.”

The petitioner further explained that Sylva’s doctoral degree in International Relations, which he claimed to have obtained from Ubis University, Switzerland, bears Chief Timi Sylva.

He said Sylva did not participate in the mandatory National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, scheme and did not obtain an exemption certificate as required by law.

The petition reads in part: “Obviously, the certificates mentioned above have visible anomalies and do not depict the true identity of CHIEF TIMPRE SYLVA. It is confusing as to who CHIEF TIMIPRE SYLVA is; who ANAGHA TIMIPRE MARLIN is; who MARLIN ANAGHA TIMIPRE is and who ANAGHA TIMIPERE is.

“There is no evidence anywhere showing that CHIEF TIMPRE SYLVA ever changed his name from ANAGHA TIMIPRE MARLIN to TIMIPRE SYLVA in 1986 after he purportedly graduated from University of Port Harcourt.”

Use Deodorants And Stop Smelling Like Rotten Goats – Frederick Leonard Drags Movie Crew
Popular Nigerian actor and filmmaker, Frederick Leonard has taken a swipe at cast and crew who come on set with unpleasant body and mouth odour, leaving others uncomfortable. The actor’s comment came after his colleague, Victor Okpalan took to his Instagram page to complain about how some of the movie crew come on set without using deodorants.

In agreement, Frederick Leonard took to the comment section and dragged the movie crew members who don’t keep themselves well but have an unpleasant smell on their bodies. According to him, anyone with a functioning brain will make it a point to use a deodorant especially when they know they work with people for long periods of hours.

He wrote, “Any Human being That Has A FUNCTIONING BRAIN Wether Cast or Crew, should Use Deodorants. And touch up Again by 5. pm so you don’t begin to smell like rotten Goat For a Profession that requires that we are Constantly on our Feet for a minimum of 14 hours, COMMON SENSE SHOULD APPLY.. Report shows Nigeria records 55 million malaria cases annually
The Federal Government said an estimated 55 million cases of malaria and nearly 90,000 malaria deaths occur each year in Nigeria.

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire disclosed this at a press briefing to commemorate the World Malaria Day, themed ‘Time to deliver zero malaria: invest, innovate, implement,’ with the slogan ‘Act now.’

Dr Ehanire, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mamman Mamuda, said despite efforts by the government and its partners to combat the effects of malaria in the country, the country still accounts for 27 per cent of global malaria cases and 32 per cent of global malaria deaths.

“It is estimated that approximately 55 million cases of malaria and nearly 90,000 malaria deaths occur each year in our country.

“Malaria also has an adverse effect on the economy of our nation as it is the major cause of absenteeism in schools, offices, businesses, markets and thereby reducing the income of families, including the hardship of out-of-pocket expenses borne by Nigerians yearly for diagnosis and treatment.

The out-of-pocket expenditure for malaria is estimated to be 70 per cent and Nigerians pay as much as N2,280 on each malaria.

“The economic burden of malaria in Nigeria was estimated at $1.6b (N687bn) in 2022 and may increase to about $2.8bn (N2tn) in 2030.

It is important to note that successful control of malaria will increase productivity, improve health, reduce school absenteeism, reduce poverty and facilitate the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Consequently, we must continue to fight to achieve zero malaria by 2030, in line with the World Health Organisation’s global technical strategy,” he said.

The government, however, calls for investment to defeat malaria and step up innovative strategies and impactful interventions.

The Labour Party has dissociated from a viral letter signed by the self-acclaimed factional national chairman of the party, Lamidi Apapa, asking the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal to dismiss all cases by the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi against the emergence if the All Progressives Congress’ Bola Tibubu, in the February 25 General election.

According to a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday by the party’s acting National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, on Tuesday, it partly read, “We urged the Tribunal in Abuja to disregard the antics by Apapa, who us a suspended Deputy National Chairman of our party.

“We are by this statement informing all arms of judiciary, including the Tribunals and courts to ignore the ignoble antics of these compromised suspended members of the party.

“We are also calling on the police, DSS and EFCC to arrest these enemies of democracy,” the statement added.

Corroborating the stance of the party, Ifoh spoke on Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today, alleging that Apapa is seeking to jeopardise the victory of Obi with his action.

Ifoh, who later spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme, on Tuesday, alleged that Apapa is seeking to jeopardise Obi’s victory with his action.

“Approaching the tribunals to withdraw all the cases lodged by Labour Party candidates across board is the height of subterfuge and treachery, and Nigerians will resist this ploy to plunge the nation into unnecessary turmoil,” he maintained.

“The leadership of the Labour Party is therefore calling on the tribunals to disregard any letter emanating from our suspended National Legal Adviser, Samuel Akingbade to the effect that all our cases are to be withdrawn.

However, Apapa has insisted that he is the party’s acting national chairman, adding, “Since the court had suspended Abure and other national officers, I am the next to take over.”

EFCC to retrieve N4.6bn fraud documents for Fani-Kayode’s trial
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday obtained an order to retrieve all the documents it tendered as exhibits in the N4.6bn money laundering trial of a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode.

The EFCC obtained the order from Justice Daniel Osiagor of the Federal High Court in Lagos to enable it re-file the charges before the Abuja division of the court.

The decision to take the case from Lagos to Abuja followed the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which held that the Abuja division of the Federal High Court, rather than Lagos, has the jurisdiction to hear the case.

The EFCC charged Fani-Kayode alongside a former Minister of State for Finance, Nenandi Usman; a former Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, Yusuf Danjuma, and a company, Jointrust Dimensions Nigeria Ltd.

In the 17 counts filed against them, they were accused of laundering N4.6bn in the build-up to the 2015 general elections.

In the middle of the trial before Justice Rilwan Aikawa in Lagos, the defendants challenged the jurisdiction of the court, on the grounds that the facts of the case happened in Abuja, rather than Lagos.

But Justice Aikawa dismissed their objection after which they went on appeal.

The appellate court later upheld the defendants’ appeal, holding that the Lagos court lacks jurisdiction over the case.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Tuesday, EFCC Prosecutor, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), told the court that in view of the judgment of the Court of Appeal, all exhibits and documents tendered by the prosecution should be released to enable the commission to commence the matter afresh at the Federal High Court Abuja.

Justice Osiagor granted the application.

In the charges, the EFCC alleged that Fani-Kayode and others at various times unlawfully retained over N4.6bn which they reasonably ought to have known formed part of the proceeds of unlawful acts of stealing and corruption.

MultiChoice to increase DSTv, GOTv subscription rates by 17%

This was confirmed in a text message sent to customers that the new rates will take effect on May 1, 2023.

The pay-tv firm said the price adjustment was due to the rising costs of business operations.

“Please note that from May 1, your monthly subscription (premium) will be N24,500. To retain your old price of N21,000 for up to 12 months ensure you are active by April 30,” the text message reads.

With the hike, the price on the Compact+ bouquet would move to N16,600 from N14,250 monthly.

Subscribers on the Compact bouquet will now pay N10,500 as against N9,000; while those on Confam package are set to pay N6,200 compared to the previous N5,300.

NIMASA DG confirms Nigeria maritime industry large enough to engage teaming youths
Director General of, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Dr. Bashir Jamoh, has stated that the Maritime industry in Nigeria is large enough to sustainably engage the teeming youths.

Dr Jamoh disclosed this Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Major General Barry Ndiomu (rtd), at the Maritime House, Apapa, Lagos State.

He noted that there are enormous opportunities in the Nigerian Maritime Industry that youths can take advantage of to generate foreign earnings.

The DG noted that the meeting between both agencies is a wakeup call on the need to collaborate efforts, as both agencies are closely related. He recalled that in 2021 when he visited the Amnesty Office in Abuja, there was an agreement to form a Joint Board Meeting to drive more conversations for collaboration.

He added that this was a critical time for NIMASA and PAP to have a robust and formidable relationship, adding that “the international community is already commending Nigeria for the successes recorded in addressing Maritime insecurity in the country”.

“Both the Nigerian government and international committee are watching to see if the tempo can be sustained”, he said.

Jamoh thus suggested that to sustain the current tempo, it was important to fully empower and reintegrate beneficiaries of the Amnesty Programme into the society.

He informed that NIMASA has trained over 4,000 Nigerians internationally under the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme, the majority of whom are from the Niger Delta.

Earlier in his remarks, the PAP Interim Administrator commended the DG and his team for redefining the safety and security of Nigeria’s Maritime Industry. “I’m aware of your outstanding achievements, particularly in the obvious reduction of piracy on the Gulf of Guinea,” Ndiomu said of Jamoh.

On his agenda for the Amnesty Programme, the General said: “My vision is to chart a new path for the Amnesty Programme by upholding the principal objectives of government, by bringing innovative ideas, setting a new Management structure of wealth creation for the teeming youths, instead of depending on monthly stipends, to pave way for a more prosperous future.”

While encouraging NIMASA to sustain the partnership with PAP, Ndiomu called for more collaboration and cooperation from international stakeholders.

He added that in the Maritime domain, the PAP has trained a large number of ex-agitators across institutions in the world in various specializations, some of which include Deep Sea Diving, Underwater Welding, and Marine Engineering. He regretted that after these trainings, many of them remain unemployed.

Gen. Ndiomu further sought the possibility of the establishment of a Coordinating Secretariat between PAP and NIMASA to drive strategic engagement and conversations. “We are looking at exploring technical support from NIMASA, job placement opportunities in within the Maritime Industry for our qualified delegates”, he added.

Airfares rises as foreign airlines settle for N582/$1
For the third time in less than a month, the rate of exchange (RoE) applicable to foreign airlines has ballooned, hitting N582/$1 with attendant spike in the cost of international air travel.

At the new RoE, registered by the Global Distribution System (GDS), a six-hour Lagos-London economy class ticket now fluctuates between N1.1 million and N2.97 million – subject to airline of choice, place and time of booking. Its business class variant sells for an average of N3.36 million to N4.8 million.

While stakeholders regretted that the development has further pushed international air travel beyond the reach of average Nigerians, they acknowledged the inherent respite on foreign airlines that are patronising the Investors’ and Exporters’ (I&E) FX window for fund repatriation, and reopening of naira inventories to travel agencies in the countries.

It will be recalled that the international segment of the aviation sector has been in a stuck fund crisis in the last one year, with knock-on effects on inventories, asking price, and near-collapse of local travel agencies.

Earlier intervention by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) did pledge $265 million in August 2022, leaving a balance of $200 million of the fund. But the stranded funds kept piling by daily sales of tickets, to warrant Emirates Airlines quitting the Nigerian route late October 2022. As at the last check, industry sources said the accumulated was well over $800 million.

The Guardian learnt that following a negotiation to end the logjam, the authorities recently conceded a shift from the official CBN window to the volatile I&E window for the repatriation of foreign airlines’ funds in Nigeria.

The push-pull effect has been evident in the applicable rate of exchange, and attendant cost of travel. At this time last month, the RoE was pegged at N462 to a dollar. About a week later, the rate climbed to N500/$1. Some days afterwards, it reached N551. Last week, the high vicissitude window hit a new high of N582/$1, with airfares tagging along.

Inquiries by The Guardian showed a varying price range across international carriers on the Nigerian route. For instance, Qatar and Ethiopian Airways have some of the cheapest airfares en route London destination – being one of the most popular for Nigerian air travellers.

A Lagos-London-Lagos economy class ticket seat on Qatar (with stopover in Doha), at the weekend, cost an average of N1.2 million. Its business class was sold for N4.8 million. The flagship African carrier, Ethiopia (via Addis Ababa), offered the two cabins for N1.1 million and N3.36 million, respectively.

Legacy carriers like British Airways (BA) and Virgin Atlantic (VA) are on the higher side. Direct Lagos-London-Lagos flight ticket on BA costs an average of N1.8 million in economy cabin and N4.41 million for business class travellers. VA offered the economy class for an average of N2.2 million.

American carrier on the Lagos-Atlanta-Lagos route, Delta Air, charged an average of N4.64 million for economy, and N8.36 million per seat in the business cabin. Similar route on Qatar (via Doha) averages N3.24 million for economy and N4.53 for Business Class travellers.

Travel operators and experts alike were unanimous that the new rates were inevitable and partly a good omen in the current market realities.

Notwithstanding the extra push in the cost of travel that is passed to consumers, President of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA), Susan Akporiaye, said the new dispensation in fare pricing is partly solving the problem of stuck funds, and accessibility of tickets to Nigerians.

Akporiaye told reporters that foreign airlines were beginning to repatriate funds from tickets sold in local currency, with a chain reaction in reopening inventories to travel agencies.

Chairman of the Airlines and Passengers Joint Committee (APJC) of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Bankole Bernard, said foreign airlines accessing the I&E window might be the permanent solution to the perennial problem of stuck funds, and unleashing the commercial viability of the international segment.

Bernard reiterated that the stuck fund crisis had regrettably dragged on for too long because the government was indecisive on what to do with the FX liquidity crisis, and its effects on the foreign airlines.

“The government has been neither here nor there. If you are telling the airlines not to sell at NAFEX rate, but in Naira, and they are not getting their equivalence for repatriation, then the government is the creator of the problem.

“But the airline has started getting their money because they are not waiting for the CBN anymore. They are doing I&E window, though it is higher, but it is good for the airlines, and even the government. The only people that are suffering in all of this are the masses.

“But when you do not subsidise airfares, the airlines will become commercially lucrative because they can sell at the RoE and repatriate their monies easily. Instead of doing one flight, they can do three trips, and make more money. In transport, the real income comes from volume and not yield,” Bernard said.

He added that with the development, a lot of airlines are beginning to warm up to the travel agencies again, and “we are certainly going to sell more tickets this year than last year”.

Travel expert, Sunday Olumegbon, however, said that the approach would further disenfranchise average Nigerians from the aviation industry.

Olumegbon noted that the recent surge in both local and international air traffic would be eroded by cut-throat pricing mechanisms.

Indeed, a summary of 2022 industry performance by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), on the overall, showed a market rebound of over 16.17 million passengers recorded on both the domestic (12.7 million) and international (3.5 million) market segments.

The 2022 total traffic figure showed a 13 per cent increase when compared with 2021 figures (14.2 million), and the highest passenger traffic since the COVID-19 post-pandemic era.

Olumegbon said: “In a country of over 200 million, that less than seven per cent of the population travels by air is nothing to be proud of in modern aviation. It used to be eight per cent; so we are retrogressing in our numbers. With the new pricing, how many Nigeria residents will be able to afford international travel? That is the issue.

“Technically, we have solved a problem by creating another one. Aviation globally is the business of freedom. Here, we have further made it elitist, and only for the rich that can afford routine trips,” he said.

Apparently in agreement with Olumegbon, travel analyst, and member of the Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI), Olumide Ohunayo, said the solution to the high pricing regime is to build local capacity for fair competition.

Ohunayo explained that the upward adjustment in RoE is not the exclusive preserve of foreign airlines, rather, based on agreement with the CBN, and notification of the Civil Aviation Authority.

“Even before now, and due to accumulation of funds, the airlines have been selling only premiums to cushion the effect of the trapped funds. Now that they have increased the RoE through I&E window, I think we are gradually getting to the solution. What we need to do is to unify all these different rates like IMF, and the likes have advised. People are making so much money from the different windows, and breaking down the economy.

“Really, the fare going up is inevitable, and that is the situation we have found ourselves in. We only need to compete, and throw more capacities into the international segment. It is either you encourage Nigerian airlines to participate or increase frequencies of foreign airlines.

“I want to see Nigerian airlines participating in the foreign segment. I am seeing local airlines (Air Peace) going to India, Israel, but what is happening to the core routes like London, Ireland, U.S.? We must throw in the capacity to bring down prices,” Ohunayo said.
